I am still old school and need a good planner to keep my life functional and in order. I need to physically write things down and cross things out……that makes me feel good. I love using different colored pens to make my planner look pretty. It is my daily digest and is always with me and is always opened.
Last year I purchased The Day Designer by Whitney English, but I was very curious about Emily Ley’s Simplified Planner. So, this year, I bought them both to compare.
Let’s talk about the ordering process first. The Simplified Planner went on sale two weeks before The Day Designer, and I received it in only TWO DAYS!!! However, she only has three designs to choose from. The Day Designer took about a month to get here, but she has eight designs available. I was able to find a design from each that I love. They are both priced around the same at $60.
I am in awe over the beautiful colors of The Simplified Planner! I LOVE the bright colored tabs……let’s be honest here, this is what really attracted me to this planner. It also has a nice matte finish so you do not get any finger prints on it. Last year, The Day Designer had this fabulous elastic band, but they did away with it. I love using the band to reference where I am in the planner.
The Day Designer is what I used last year, and it really helped to keep me grounded. They took the elastic band away, but I can deal with that (you can buy one here). I do love how she changed the pages from beige to a nice bright white. The planner looks so much cleaner when writing on white. The Day Designer has a shiny surface rather then the matte that the Simplified Planner has. The gold tabs can be hard to read (okay, I am 40, so it may not be as hard for you to see). I do love the mint corner shields on the front, so pretty!
Both are of equal quality as far as the construction. Same thickness in paper, same binding and the same sturdy cover. My 2014 Day Designer has been through a lot in 11 months, and it is still in very nice condition.
Now, let’s take a peek on the inside……
The Day Designer (top image) has a really nice year at a glance! I love that it has actual boxes that you can write in. Although the boxes are tiny, you can write in (or color code) different events for the entire year. The Simplified planner has a year at a glance, but you can’t write anything in there. This one is pretty big for me, as I like to see and plan for the entire year. The Simplified Planner has a nice place to write your bucket list for the year. This does not amuse me as much, I would rather have the two pages of the yearly calendar.
The Day Designer doesn’t have a ‘Bucket List’, but look at this beauty! A nice place for your yearly goals!!
Monthly layouts are almost identical. The Simplified Planner has holidays written in, while The Day Designer does not. The boxes on the Day Designer are just slightly bigger.
The Daily pages are quite similar too. The Simplified Planner starts at 7am and goes up until 7pm giving you two lines for each hour. I love that! A lot of times I have things booked on the half hour, so this is great!! The Day Designer goes from 5am until 9pm and only gives you one line per time. Rarely (if ever) do I have anything planned that early in the morning or that late. I would much rather have two lines for each hour. They both have a to-do list, although the Day Designer gives you a bit more room there. Take a look:
Another favorite detail from The Day Designer……..it even has a 2016 year at glance so you can really think ahead!
Which would YOU choose??
PROS & CONS of each (in my opinion):
THE DAY DESIGNER:
- The nice year at a glance in the front with the boxes is awesome!!
- The following year at a glance is wonderful too
- The extra space for my daily to-do list is nice
- No more elastic band (this is not a deal breaker for me)
- The gold tabs are hard to read
- I wish the times on the daily pages were from 7am to 7pm leaving two lines for each (this is kinda big for me)
The Simplified Planner
- I absolutely LOVE the bright colored tabs
- I also like the elastic band (not a deal breaker though)
- The daily times going from 7am – 7pm with two lines is AWESOME!
- The year at a glance just doesn’t cut it for me
- On the monthly pages, I could deal without the holidays to have more writing room (and the squares are a tad smaller)
- Not much of a design collection to choose from
What I wish they both had……a nice WEEKLY calendar! Either on one or two pages highlighting what needs to be completed this week. I have been taking a bigger sticky note and sticking it to the book with my weekly to-do list. Having one in the book would really win me over!
Obviously, I only need one planner……..so I will be GIVING AWAY the other!! I am choosing to keep The Day Designer. I am a loyal customer in every aspect, so I want to be loyal to her. I will be giving away THE SIMPLIFIED PLANNER to one lucky winner!!!
This contest is now over, thanks to everyone who participated!! Congrats to Melissa!
